Hire an Accountant or Bookkeeper for $6-10 per Hour at Staff.com

If you run a busy accounting practice, you know how difficult it is to get reliable help. And if you do find someone they are going to cost a whole lot more than $10 per hour.

Busy accounting practice

How is it possible to hire an accountant or bookkeeper at $6-10 per hour?

Basically you will be hiring from our offshore labor pool, most likely in the Philippines or India. Before you react in horror, “how can I ever hire someone offshore?”, just think about it for a second. What if you could access someone who is competent, willing to work hard, has an accounting degree and brains and is ready to learn new things. Would it be worth it for you to overcome some of the challenges of working remotely with this person?

What type of skills or experience can I expect to find?

What we suggest is that you look for someone who is bright, trained in accounting and bookkeeping and is willing to learn more. You can expect to find someone who has the full capability to do bookkeeping work for you. However you can’t generally expect to find someone who can do accounting in your local country as they may not have training in the specific accounting rules that apply in your local market.

How do I communicate with my staff member?

We can help you to get set up with a variety of communication tools that will allow you to work in a remote environment. You can use Skype to make phone calls or if that is not suitable for you, international calls are not particularly expensive.

How do I really know they are working?

Staff.com has tracking technology which records the hours worked, web sites visited when working and can take screenshots of the person’s computer screen to prove they are working.

Is there any contract with the Staff.com service?

There is no contract, you can hire someone and let them go at any time. What we recommend however is that you treat this as a long term investment. Even if they are 60% capable in the beginning compared with a local staff member, within 6 months of training you can bring them up to being 100% as capable as someone you could hire locally (if you hire someone on Staff.com who is bright and willing to learn).

How much does it cost?

There is no cost to start looking for someone. You can immediately check out our accounting staff and their rates. There are no additional fees. You pay only for the hours worked which is tracked using our powerful time tracking software. Go ahead and register as an employer and post a job. We will check your company details and then approve you as an employer and start looking for someone for your job post.

How do I get started?

You create the job specs of the person you are looking for. We recommend that you also create a short test of 2-3 accounting questions that you think this person should know. We will select from our pool of candidates, give them the test and then you start hiring them on a trial basis.

Give our accounting and bookkeeping staff a go. We would be very happy to assist you with hiring one.

    We've looked at outsourcing

We've sent work offshore and then had to basically do it all again because the "qualified bookkepers" didn't know what they were doing

We've lost work to offshore agenies, and then had the client come back to us because the standard of the offshore work was so bad

What can you offer that these other agencies have failed to do?

To make it work you need to treat it not just like hiring an agency and instead treat it like hiring a staff member. First you work with 2-3 different people and assess their skills with a test or with some initial test work. Then you settle in with the best person out of the 2-3 people. You don't treat it as something where you can just give the agency work and expect everything to be done 100%. You expect the same as you would from a junior bookkeeper who was starting with you in Australia for example. You may need to give them some training (even though they have qualifications as an accountant, their degree is not as thorough as someone in Australia). So I'm not promising that the process is absolutely easy and totally free of hassle.

However once you find the right person (or several great people). The cost savings are fantastic and having a reliable person always there is a very valuable resource for you.

      So the answer is:

      a) Develop a test that you think adequately tests the person's bookkeeping skills. We do have a test as well we can give to applicants or you can develop one if you want to make sure they meet your specific requirements

      b) Give the test to several people

      c) Find a person who fits your needs and work with them long term

We have some comments from people that they don't really believe it's possible. How can there be Bookkeepers available at these rates? Really it's about globalization and accessing talent from any country around the world. When you look at hiring from lower cost countries you will be surprised at the difference in wages. In the Philippines for example, $2-3 per hour is actually a very normal wage for some college graduates so $6-10 an hour is relatively a high wage.
