What Does It Cost to Run a Startup? – Infographic

Staff.com on building its employee monitoring software was based on the idea of having employees from all around the world.

And we’re a startup. So we thought it would be interesting to compare the costs of a startup including a small office and hiring 2 developers and 1 designer from different cities and countries.

I think that I used TimeDoctor earlier but then I started using Replicon’s time management software as it had been pretty simple and could be used as an integrated suite.

All I loved about this tool has been its simplicity and great features.

  2. George says:

Belgrade, Serbia. Altogether less than $25k. Great tech. talent.

  3. Silicon Tales says:

    Would quite definitely add:

    Amsterdam, The Netherlands
    Berlin, Germany
    Karachi, Paksitan

  4. Stan T says:

Try Varna, Bulgaria – $8000 for developer, $6000 for designer, $4000 for office!

  5. Simone says:

Interesting but not sure how accurate or current the average salaries are. There is no startup in San Francisco that can find developers for only $80K. I also have a hard time believing how an office in San Francisco is more expensive than Mumbai.

    • Simone says:

Sorry I meant how an office is less expensive in SF than Mumbai

      • Harsha says:

Not really. Good areas in Mumbai are pretty expensive (check magicbricks.com)

I am not an expert on SF rentals, but a quick glance on Craigslist for office rental spaces in SF, is listing at $2-2.5 per sqft.In Mumbai (per magicbricks.com), it’s around the same or more (comparing good versus good 🙂 )!

  6. Nora says:

Beautiful infographics! I need to tell a secret, best place in US to open start up is Sacramento, very low salaries, cheap offices and you are in 2 hours drive from Silicon Valley!

  7. Ulf says:

    Interesting, but incomplete.
To calculate cost, even limited to staff and office space like here, you need to at least add social costs, fees and taxes to the mix. This would likely result in a very different list.
Also good to know is that when you sell your baby, you get to keep all that money yourself if you are located in Zurich… as capital gains taxes do not exist in Switzerland. Welcome to Paradise 😉

  8. Shilpi Agarwal says:

This is very interesting. However, the question is if a Startup can do with just a Developer, a Designer and an office space! Seems like a really really lean startup!

  9. Gabriel says:

Your analysis is too simple, add taxes and non salary related employee costs to it.

  10. Dmitry says:

    Belarus < 10000 accordingly to http://salaries.dev.by/

  11. Robert says:

This is a very interesting Infographic but the typical StartUps hot spots on the world are missing. Berlin, Bangalore, Tel Aviv, Amsterdam and Hongkong. Would be nice to see this graphic with more cities.

  12. Hasan Junaid Hashmi says:

Please add the cost for Karachi, Pakistan.
